NIWC Atlantic is looking for bright, motivated young men and women, 16 years and older and U.S. citizens who have an interest in engineering, math, physics, and science.

NIWC Atlantic is a Department of the Navy organization providing engineered systems and technologies for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (C4ISR), Information Technology (IT), Information Operations (IO), Information Assurance (IA), Business IT, Enterprise Information Services (EIS) and Space Systems. What Will I Do at NIWC Atlantic?

As part of the SEAP (Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program) experience, students at NIWC Atlantic are fully integrated into an active project under the guidance of a NIWC Atlantic engineer or scientist mentor. Interns will participate in enrichment activities to foster professional development.

The NIWC Atlantic 5.0 Engineering Competency provides cost effective engineering solutions for the development, delivery, and sustainment of integrated, interoperable, and effective C4ISR, Business IT, and Space Systems capabilities. Through rigorous yet agile systems engineering and disciplined technical leadership, the 5.0 Engineering Competency ensures there are the skilled engineering personnel to execute NIWC Atlantic programs and projects.  This competency forecasts the demand (competencies, skills, workforce size, and guidance) for support to DoD, Coalition, and other agencies who seek support for systems engineering for acquisition, war fighter technical support, and the development of overarching engineering processes and best practices.


The 5.2 System of Systems Engineering competency provides Systems Engineering, Architecture Development, Operations Research & Systems Analysis, Platform/Infrastructure Engineering, Installation, Integration, Interface Management, Legacy Modernization, Production and Transition for mission engineering, and ashore, afloat, expeditionary, vehicular and sub-surface platforms while maintaining process ownership for Requirements Engineering, Design, Integration, Technical Planning and Engineering Management.


The 5.5 Communications and Networks competency conducts scientific and engineering activities associated with development, test, evaluation, fielding, and sustainment of assured communications and networking capabilities for the maritime, joint, national, and coalition environments.  The networking areas specialize in network architectures, advanced network technologies, local area networks (wired/wireless), wide area networks, network services, mobile networks, network management, and monitoring and control for network systems for wireless and wireline technologies.

The communications areas specialize in basic and advanced communications architectures and technologies, wireless/optical communications, antenna system engineering, communication data links, radio frequency communications, including narrowband and wideband Satellite Communications (SATCOM) engineering and environmental impacts of electromagnetic propagation. A critical element of this competency is the systems engineering to enable the integration of communications and networks systems, which provides viable, integrated solutions for the customers’ mature communications and network systems.

The 5.6 Data Science and Analytics competency empowers individuals to plan, design, develop and deliver innovative solutions that enables the warfighter to collect and process data into tactically relevant information and transform this information into actions that influence, disrupt or deny human and automated decision making.

The 5.9 Mission Assurance (MA) competency is the next evolution of 5.8 and 5.9, focused on Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) from a cyber and functional context. It is where we build and employ a workforce, which supports our customers in ensuring we are providing secure capabilities, which meet their needs.
